Is Former Illini Coleman Hawkins Earning a Spot on the Golden State Warriors’ NBA Roster?
Standing at 6-foot-10, Coleman Hawkins has demonstrated the kind of versatility and hustle that the Warriors highly value in their frontcourt players.
Hawkins’ college career didn’t quite end as expected, for him or anyone else. However, he’s quickly turning things around as he begins his professional journey.
A fan favorite during his time at Illinois, Hawkins tested the NBA waters after his 2024-25 season by attending the NBA Combine, but ultimately chose to transfer to Kansas State for his final year of eligibility. While he made improvements in many key areas during his time at Kansas State, his scoring numbers took a dip. The Cougars finished with a disappointing 16-17 record and missed the NCAA Tournament. Hawkins, whose recruitment came with a major NIL investment, was seen as a letdown. To top it off, he wasn’t invited to the NBA Draft Combine.
But that’s behind him now. After going undrafted last month, Hawkins signed with the Golden State Warriors for their Summer League, and he’s been making an impact ever since:

On July 5, he put up seven points and five rebounds in just 12 minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers.

He followed that up with nine points, three rebounds, and four assists in 21 minutes against the Miami Heat.

And in his most impressive performance so far, he recorded seven points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals in a win over the Utah Jazz.
Although Hawkins isn’t your typical big man, his skill set — which includes athleticism, activity, three-point shooting, and playmaking — is well-suited for today’s NBA. His ability to fill a variety of roles makes him a strong candidate for the Warriors, especially with Draymond Green entering his 14th season at age 34. In the best-case scenario, Hawkins could seamlessly slide into the backup role for Green.
There’s still much to prove, but Hawkins’ strong Summer League showing could very well lead to an NBA contract. At the very least, he appears to be a lock for the Warriors’ G League affiliate as a developmental prospect. With his size, skills, and basketball IQ, he could thrive as an NBA rotation player in the right situation — and the Warriors’ system could be the perfect fit for him.
