Rival QB Lauds Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed at SEC Media Days
During SEC Media Days, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier spoke highly of Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed after spending time with him at the Manning Passing Academy. The Texas A&M-LSU rivalry, though still relatively new, has already seen its share of memorable moments, including the iconic seven-overtime game in 2018 and Reed’s impressive ground-and-pound comeback win last season.
In that game, Reed led the Aggies to a second-half rally with only two pass attempts, while LSU’s Nussmeier helped out the Aggies with three interceptions.
Garrett Nussmeier’s Praise for Marcel Reed
Both Nussmeier and Reed attended the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodeau, Louisiana, this offseason. The prestigious three-day camp, hosted by the Manning family, focuses on fundamentals for offensive skill positions, bringing in a select group of college quarterbacks. It was there that the two rivals got the chance to connect.
“He is a good football player, and he can make plays with his feet and his arm,” Nussmeier said of Reed, according to TexAgs. “He is a great person, and I look forward to watching him this year.”
Reed’s Impressive Freshman Season
Reed made a name for himself last season as a redshirt freshman. Despite splitting time with now-Houston quarterback Conner Weigman, Reed threw for 1,864 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions, completing 61.3% of his passes. On the ground, he rushed for 547 yards and seven touchdowns. Three of those rushing touchdowns and 62 of his rushing yards came in the game against LSU, which was helped by LSU turnovers that gave the Aggies favorable field position.
“I might have made a couple jokes that we ‘gave’ that game to them,” Nussmeier said, laughing. “We had a laugh.”
Heisman Watch and Upcoming Rematch
Both Nussmeier and Reed are now in the conversation for the Heisman, with Nussmeier being considered among the top contenders.
The Aggies and Tigers are set to face off again in Week 9, with Reed making his first start in Death Valley. The home team has historically won this matchup, so Texas A&M will look to break that trend. The game is set in the flex time slot, so if both teams perform well, it could be a primetime showdown.
Currently, LSU leads the all-time series 35-21-2.
