Seattle Mariners Players Make Mexican Baseball History in All-Star Game

Randy Arozarena and Andres Munoz, both holding Mexican citizenship, were part of a historic moment for Mexico in this year’s MLB All-Star Game, which featured a record four Mexican players. Along with Arozarena and Munoz, Alejandro Kirk (Blue Jays) and Jonathan Aranda (Rays) also represented Mexico, marking the first time in history that four Mexican players took part in the Midsummer Classic.

In addition to Arozarena and Munoz, the Seattle Mariners had four players active in Tuesday night’s game. Catcher Cal Raleigh started for the American League, Bryan Woo pitched a scoreless inning, Arozarena took three at-bats and participated in the “swing-off,” while Munoz threw 0.2 scoreless innings.

Though not initially scheduled, Houston Astros infielder Isaac Paredes, also a Mexican citizen, had to withdraw from the game. Arozarena was brought in as his replacement. Despite being born in Cuba, Arozarena holds Mexican citizenship and represented Mexico during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Looking ahead, both Arozarena and Munoz are expected to play for Mexico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Other Mariners players could also join the event, with Raleigh already committed to being the catcher for Team USA. Julio Rodriguez and Luis Castillo (Dominican Republic), Matt Brash (Canada), Michael Arroyo (Colombia), and Mariners pitchers Bryan Woo, Logan Gilbert, and George Kirby (Team USA) are all potential participants.

The Mariners, currently 51-45 and five games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West, will return from the All-Star break on Friday for an important series against the Astros at T-Mobile Park.
