The former Cowboy is headed to play for one of the league’s youngest teams

Former Oklahoma State standout Lindy Waters III is on the move to a new team.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Waters has agreed to a one-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs. The upcoming season will mark his fifth in the NBA and his debut for a fourth franchise.

Waters started last season with the Golden State Warriors after being traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2024 NBA Draft. He had spent his first three seasons in OKC before making the move to Golden State.

With the Warriors, Waters played a limited role under Steve Kerr. In 38 games, including nine starts, he averaged 5.5 points while shooting just 33.1% from three-point range.

At the trade deadline, Waters was dealt to the Detroit Pistons, joining fellow Oklahoma State alum Cade Cunningham. Despite the reunion, Waters saw little action, logging mostly garbage-time minutes and never breaking into J.B. Bickerstaff’s rotation.

After struggling for consistent playing time in Detroit, Waters now gets a fresh start in San Antonio. The Spurs are seeking shooters to complement their young core, and Waters could become a valuable asset for a team aiming for the playoffs.

Perhaps the most exciting storyline is Waters teaming up with Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4 French sensation who has quickly become one of the league’s biggest attractions. If Waters can rediscover his shooting touch, Spurs assistant coach Mitch Johnson will find it hard to keep him on the bench. Given San Antonio’s current wing depth, Waters should have a real opportunity for minutes, something he lacked in Oklahoma City and Detroit.

With Marcus Smart also landing with the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, a few former Cowboys are finding new homes—potentially setting the stage for some of their best NBA seasons yet.
