Cardinals Cut Ties with Veteran Pitcher in First Move Ahead of Trade Deadline
The St. Louis Cardinals are making it clear that they may be sellers as the July 31 trade deadline approaches, and their latest move could signal their direction moving forward.
After a frustrating 8-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies—who currently hold the worst record in MLB at 25-76—it’s becoming increasingly evident that the Cardinals are not playoff contenders this year.
With a focus on rebuilding, it’s not surprising that Cardinals president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, made a bold but necessary decision on Wednesday.
“Right-handed pitcher Andre Granillo has been recalled from Memphis (AAA),” the team announced. “RHP Erick Fedde has been designated for assignment.”
Fedde, who has struggled this season, holds a poor 3-10 record with a 5.22 ERA, a 63-to-47 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .270 batting average against, and a 1.50 WHIP over 101 2/3 innings.
His start on Tuesday against the Rockies, where he gave up six earned runs in just three innings, will likely be his final appearance for the Cardinals. Fedde, who had a standout season last year with the Chicago White Sox and Cardinals, now faces uncertainty, as he may be traded, claimed off waivers, or released.
Fedde’s departure clears a spot in the rotation for promising prospect Michael McGreevy. While it’s tough to see a veteran like Fedde falter this season, this move marks the beginning of a potentially brighter future for the Cardinals, with bold decisions aimed at rebuilding the franchise.
