Cardinals Star Off the Trade Block; Staying in St. Louis

It seems the St. Louis Cardinals won’t be trading Sonny Gray before the deadline after all.

Gray, who has a no-trade clause, made it clear during the offseason that he intended to use it, and he’s sticking to that stance. MLB.com’s John Denton reported on Monday that Gray has no interest in waiving his no-trade clause until at least after the 2025 season.

“Cardinals RHP Sonny Gray recently met with POBO John Mozeliak to discuss trade interest from other teams, per a source,” Denton said. “Gray reiterated his desire to remain in St. Louis—at least through 2025.”

If Gray were on the market, he would certainly fetch a significant return. There are few high-caliber starting pitchers available in trades right now, and Gray would rank among the best. However, it appears he is committed to staying put.

The right-hander is currently 10-4 with a 4.33 ERA and a stellar 128-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 116 1/3 innings. While his ERA is a bit higher than usual, Gray has consistently given the Cardinals a chance to win whenever he’s on the mound.

Last offseason, trade rumors swirled, but players like Gray opting not to waive their no-trade clauses played a big part in the Cardinals holding off on big moves. It seems that could be the case again this trade deadline.
