Nationals’ CJ Abrams Stealing Bases with Unstoppable Streak

Despite the Washington Nationals struggling as a team, shortstop CJ Abrams has been a bright spot, and his impressive performance on the basepaths has been a highlight.

Abrams has stolen 16 consecutive bases without being caught, according to the Nationals’ public relations team. He’s just one steal away from matching the longest streak of the season, currently held by Trevor Story of the Boston Red Sox and Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins. Abrams shares the second-longest streak with José Caballero of the Tampa Bay Rays and Kyle Tucker of the Chicago Cubs.

The 2019 first-round pick has been a standout performer for the Nationals this season, leading the team in stolen bases (24), batting average (.275), walks (64), doubles (24), and triples (4). His .815 OPS and 100 hits rank second on the team behind slugger James Wood.

Abrams was part of the blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres that saw the Nationals acquire him, Wood, MacKenzie Gore, Robert Hassell III, Jarlin Susana, and Luke Voit—arguably making the deal more beneficial for Washington despite losing four-time All-Star Juan Soto and Josh Bell.

Now in his third season with the Nationals (2025 will be his third year), Abrams is putting up career-best numbers, currently slashing .275/.340/.475 and recording an OPS over .800 for the first time. Though he missed time in April due to a right hip flexor strain (ironically suffered after attempting to steal a base), he’s been a steady presence since returning.

While the Nationals have had a rough season overall, sitting at 43-62 and 18.5 games behind the New York Mets in the NL East, their second-half performance has shown signs of improvement. Since the All-Star break, they’ve gone 5-4 with series wins over the Cincinnati Reds and Minnesota Twins, and they’ll finish July with a tough road trip to Houston to face the Astros.
