Chargers Urged to Trade for Veteran Receiver Terry McLaurin as Win-Now Move

The Los Angeles Chargers, who are in need of a reliable receiver behind Ladd McConkey, have emerged as a prime candidate to acquire Washington Commanders’ Pro Bowl wideout Terry McLaurin. Despite the promising early performances of rookie fifth-round pick KeAndre Lambert-Smith, it’s clear the Chargers need help at receiver—and fast.                                                                                                           

McLaurin, coming off a strong 2024 season, has requested a trade amid a contract dispute with the Commanders. As the two-time Pro Bowler grows frustrated, NFL insiders are speculating that the Chargers could be a perfect fit for the veteran wideout.

Both USA Today and NFL.com have named the Chargers as the top destination for McLaurin, and the reasoning is obvious.

Though Lambert-Smith continued to impress, including catching two passes and a 15-yard touchdown in Thursday’s Hall-of-Fame game victory over the Detroit Lions, the Chargers’ depth at receiver remains shallow behind No. 1 target McConkey.

Quarterback Justin Herbert struggled with limited weapons last season, and the situation for 2025 doesn’t look much better. Neither Quentin Johnston nor Tre Harris have shown the necessary consistency, and the offseason took a hit when free-agent addition Mike Williams retired. Despite overachieving by making the playoffs in head coach Jim Harbaugh’s first season, competing in a stacked AFC West will be a challenge without more receiving talent.

While the Commanders may seem unlikely to trade McLaurin after his strong connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels during their successful 2024 season, the situation has become complicated. McLaurin, who held out of training camp and accumulated $200,000 in fines, has now formally requested a trade. With McLaurin turning 31 in September, he’s likely to command a contract worth around $25-30 million per year, but if the Chargers are serious about making a deep playoff run, they should consider calling Washington.

McLaurin, a five-time 1,000-yard receiver, could provide the kind of proven playmaking ability the Chargers desperately need to contend for a championship.
