Cleveland Browns Sign Former Oregon Receiver Chase Cota

Chase Cota, a former wide receiver for the Oregon Ducks, has signed with the Cleveland Browns. After spending the 2022 season with Oregon, Cota has had a journeyman career in the NFL, primarily as a practice player. He previously had stints with the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, and New York Giants.

Undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, Cota has been bouncing around the league, but now joins the Browns with hopes of earning a spot on the 2025 roster. He’ll join fellow former Ducks player Dillon Gabriel, along with his cousin, safety Brady Breeze, as he competes through Cleveland’s training camp.

Cota’s college career began at UCLA, where he played from 2018-2021, racking up 883 receiving yards, six touchdowns, and 67 receptions in 53 games. He then transferred to Oregon for his final season in 2022, following in his father Chad Cota’s footsteps. Chad was a Second-Team All-American safety in 1994 and had a lengthy NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, and St. Louis Rams.

During his lone season with the Ducks, Chase Cota posted 497 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 36 receptions in 10 games, earning All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention recognition.

As the Browns’ training camp heats up, the quarterback battle between Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett is drawing the most attention. Meanwhile, Cota faces competition in the receiver room from Kaden Davis, Gage Larvadian, Luke Floriea, Kisean Johnson, and Winston Wright for a roster spot.

Cleveland’s training camp started on July 22, with their first preseason game scheduled against the Carolina Panthers on August 8, followed by matchups with the Philadelphia Eagles on August 16 and the Los Angeles Rams on August 23 at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland.

Meanwhile, several other former Ducks are also gearing up for the 2025 NFL season. One notable performance came from Nikko Reed, a cornerback for the Los Angeles Chargers, who made a strong debut in the Hall of Fame Game. The undrafted rookie had two solo tackles, two pass deflections, and an interception returned 60 yards in a 34-7 victory over the Detroit Lions. Other former Ducks on the Chargers, like defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell and linebacker Troy Dye, also contributed solid performances.

On the injury front, running back Jordan James and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, both with the San Francisco 49ers, have faced setbacks. James is being reevaluated for a knee issue, while Lenoir is recovering from a minor hip problem but is expected back soon.
