Dallas should move quickly to acquire this reliable Sharks defenseman

The San Jose Sharks are reportedly willing to trade defenseman Mario Ferraro ahead of the 2025-26 season, and the Dallas Stars should be paying close attention.

Ferraro, 26, is entering the final year of his four-year, $13 million contract and has become one of the most consistent two-way defensemen available.

According to a report from the Times of India, several playoff-contending teams have already shown interest in Ferraro before his contract expires.

Why Mario Ferraro could solidify the Dallas Stars’ defense and keep them in Cup contention

Ferraro averaged over 21 minutes of ice time per game last season, often tasked with shutting down top opponents while contributing 21 points and a plus-3 rating on a struggling Sharks team.

His penalty-killing skills and physical style would be a perfect fit for a Stars team that needs more depth and toughness on the right side of its blue line.

One analyst noted:
“Ferraro’s cap hit is reasonable for a proven top-four defenseman, and his style is ideal for a team looking for stability without a long-term commitment.”

The Stars would benefit from this move, even if it means giving up a mid-round draft pick or a younger depth forward. Ferraro’s addition would relieve pressure on players like Thomas Harley and Miro Heiskanen, creating a more balanced defensive rotation when it matters most.

Making this move now could determine whether Dallas can coast through the regular season or find themselves scrambling to fix their defense at the trade deadline. With other contenders showing interest, Jim Nill may need to act quickly to stay ahead in the tightly contested Central Division.
