Notre Dame Football Roster Undergoes Major Overhaul
Under Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame’s football roster has undergone a significant transformation, becoming stronger and more well-rounded. 
When Freeman took over as head coach, one of his first priorities was to rebuild the Fighting Irish roster. He recognized that in order to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP), Notre Dame needed to become deeper, bigger, faster, stronger, and more athletic across the board. This type of overhaul takes time, but Freeman has been steadily reshaping the roster one recruiting class and transfer portal addition at a time. The result is a much more formidable team capable of matching up with the nation’s top CFP contenders.
Improved Talent and Depth
While Notre Dame has always had a strong starting lineup, particularly under Brian Kelly, the issue in past years was the lack of depth. In the past, a few key injuries could leave the Irish vulnerable, as the drop-off from the starters to the backups was noticeable. This created a liability that good teams would exploit.
That era is now in the past. The current roster is the deepest, strongest, and most athletic it has ever been. Notre Dame now has the luxury of rotating players across multiple positions without sacrificing performance. This not only keeps players fresh but also gives more individuals the opportunity to contribute.
Today’s Irish roster can compete with the best in the nation—something that once seemed out of reach under previous coaching regimes. The next challenge for Freeman is to fully capitalize on this improved talent and push for a national championship.
