Marshall Faulk Explains Why He Joined Deion Sanders’ Coaching Staff at Colorado
Deion Sanders is continuing to build an impressive coaching staff at Colorado by adding former NFL legends, including Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk. Faulk, who is set to coach the Buffaloes’ running backs this season, is stepping into his first coaching role at any level. 
In a recent press conference, Faulk shared what led him to work under Sanders. He spoke about his long-standing friendship with the coach and explained why he believes their shared values make this an ideal fit.
“You all know him differently than I do,” Faulk said. “We’ve been friends for years. We’ve worked together in TV, and we’ve often discussed the game, particularly about helping kids entering it. How do you make sure they enter the game the right way? He’s one of those people who knows how to prepare young athletes to succeed, not just on the field, but in life. He’s committed to making sure these players leave this program as better men, ready to succeed beyond football. That’s something I connect with.”
Faulk continued, emphasizing that his decision wasn’t just about winning games on the field, but also about helping players succeed in life, by becoming strong fathers, husbands, and brothers. “That’s what drew me in,” he said.
Faulk, one of the most decorated running backs in NFL history, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He won a Super Bowl in 2000 with the Los Angeles Rams and claimed the NFL MVP award that same year after rushing for 1,359 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also earned the league’s Offensive Player of the Year title for three consecutive seasons from 1999 to 2001.
With Faulk’s star power, he is likely to attract top-tier running back talent to Boulder. His main task will be transforming a unit that ranked dead last in the FBS for rushing yards per game last season. None of Colorado’s returning players surpassed 200 rushing yards in 2024, although they did bring in transfers DeKalon Taylor and Simeon Price.
As Faulk takes the reins of the running back group, he’ll work alongside fellow NFL greats Byron Leftwich and Warren Sapp, all of whom are part of Sanders’ star-studded coaching staff, brimming with former NFL talent.
