Wisconsin Football: Billy Edwards Jr.’s Quick Release Can Counter Aggressive Defenses

The Wisconsin Badgers’ transfer quarterback has proven to be a challenge for defenses that try to get too aggressive with their pass rush. Edwards’ quick release has made him highly effective in neutralizing blitz-heavy defenses.
According to PFF’s 2025 preview of the Badgers, Edwards’ rapid release is one of his standout traits. While he excels at making deep throws, his average time to throw of 2.34 seconds was the third-fastest among qualified FBS quarterbacks last season. This quick release contributed to his impressive performance against the blitz, where he earned an 85.3 passing grade, ranking seventh nationally.
Edwards’ ability to get rid of the ball swiftly helped him outpace every other Big Ten quarterback in this category last year, and it allowed him to thrive when facing aggressive defenses. When opponents sent extra pass rushers, leaving fewer players in coverage, Edwards took advantage of one-on-one matchups for his receivers.
In his time at Maryland, Edwards threw for eight touchdowns and just three interceptions when blitzed, completing nearly 70% of his passes for a passer rating of 106.3.
His quick release also alleviates pressure on the offensive line, reducing the time they need to hold blocks. However, the faster passing game means receivers don’t have as much time to run deep routes, so Edwards will rely on his weapons to create yards after the catch.
While Edwards has the arm strength to make long throws, his ability to manage the short passing game will help him protect the football and establish a rhythm early in games.
