Texas Tech Upsets Georgia, Secures Nation’s Top Recruit for 2027 Class

The Texas Tech Red Raiders continue to make waves on the recruiting trail.

Just as they stunned the college football world by landing top 2026 recruit Felix Ojo over in-state rivals, the Texas Longhorns, the Red Raiders have done it again for the 2027 cycle. This time, they secured LaDamion Guyton, the top recruit in the country according to Rivals, beating out the Georgia Bulldogs for his commitment.

What makes this even more impressive is that Guyton was an in-state recruit for Georgia, making his decision to join Texas Tech a significant shift in the recruiting landscape.

Who Is LaDamion Guyton?

Guyton, a standout from Savannah, Georgia, is ranked as the top edge defender for the 2027 class and is widely considered a consensus top recruit.

In his first two years of high school football, Guyton posted an impressive 33 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks, earning rave reviews from scouts. A 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst praised his fluid movement and ability to bend the edge, noting his hand-to-hand combat skills that help him throw off bigger tackles. His explosive burst and agility allow him to disrupt passing lanes and chase down ball carriers. The analyst also highlighted his potential to contribute as an off-ball defender and praised his tackling and coverage abilities in limited samples.

Guyton is widely regarded as an immediate impact player at the next level, with many expecting him to be a top draft pick after just a few seasons of college play.

A New Recruiting Strategy for Texas Tech

While Texas Tech’s success on the recruiting trail may seem like a recent development, it’s part of a broader vision under general manager James Blanchard. Blanchard and his team aim to identify overlooked high school talent and capitalize on opportunities where a school might be undervaluing a recruit.

Operating within a defined NIL structure, Texas Tech is moving away from the previous era of excess and focusing on targeting players who can bring long-term value to head coach Joey McGuire’s program.

Although signing day for Guyton is still over a year away, the commitment marks a strong start to the 2027 recruiting cycle, and Texas Tech will now focus on keeping him firmly committed to Lubbock.
