Jer’Zhan Newton Impresses in Washington Commanders’ Preseason Opener

Former Illinois defensive lineman Jer’Zhan Newton made a strong impression in his 2025 preseason debut with the Washington Commanders on Friday, recording three tackles, a sack, a stuff, and a forced fumble against the New England Patriots.

Although Washington chose not to play its starters, New England did, and Newton stood out in his limited playing time. Currently listed as a backup on the Commanders’ depth chart, Newton started the final 11 games of his rookie season in 2024. If his preseason performance continues, he could earn a permanent spot in the starting lineup.

The 22-year-old finished his rookie year with 44 tackles, seven stuffs, two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a pass deflection. Many analysts have identified him as a breakout candidate for his second NFL season.

Newton was a dominant force at Illinois, earning several accolades in 2023, including Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, and All-American honors. He finished his college career with 52 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and a nation-leading four blocked kicks.

2025 NFL Outlook for Jer’Zhan Newton

Much like his college days, Newton showed continuous improvement during his rookie season, especially after Josh Allen’s injury, which opened up more opportunities for him. He performed at a high level in December and even contributed during the postseason.

Newton’s time as a role player might soon be over. With his size, speed, and versatility across the defensive line, he has all the tools to become a starting defensive tackle in the NFL. With a defensive-minded head coach in Dan Quinn, Newton is poised to be used in ways that maximize his talents as he continues to develop in Washington.
