Rangers Could Swap One Russian Sniper for Another

The New York Rangers are facing a tricky situation with star winger Artemi Panarin, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. If Panarin leaves, the Rangers will have a major void to fill on their top line.

In this scenario, the Rangers could look to replace Panarin with another Russian sniper: Kirill Kaprizov. The Minnesota Wild have been in a contract stalemate with Kaprizov, unable to reach an agreement on an extension. Some reports suggest that Kaprizov’s asking price could be around $15 million AAV, which might be more than the Wild can afford, potentially leading him to test the free agent market.

This opens the door for the Rangers. If Panarin doesn’t re-sign, the Rangers could pursue Kaprizov. The opportunity to play for the Rangers, a team loaded with talent, could be too good for Kaprizov to turn down. The idea of playing in New York, on a team with championship aspirations, could be a significant draw for the 26-year-old.

Of course, this all hinges on Panarin’s future with the team. While there’s no guarantee he’ll leave, the Rangers need to be prepared for all possibilities.

Rangers Could Make Kaprizov the NHL’s Highest-Paid Player

Signing Kaprizov won’t be cheap. Reports suggest the Wild have already offered him a contract worth $15 million AAV over eight years, yet he has yet to sign. The delay could be a sign that Kaprizov is unsure about staying in Minnesota, leaving the door open for the Rangers to swoop in with a similar offer.

Given that the Wild have already extended a sizable offer, it’s likely the Rangers would need to match or exceed that amount to sign Kaprizov.

Kaprizov’s Value

Since entering the league, Kaprizov has been one of the NHL’s premier talents. Despite being a fifth-round pick in 2015, he quickly became a star. He scored 27 goals and 51 points in 55 games during his rookie season, and followed it up with an incredible 47 goals and 108 points in his second year.

While injuries have limited his appearances in recent seasons—he played just 41 games in 2022-23—Kaprizov still managed to score 25 goals and 56 points in that time. Assuming he can stay healthy, he would be a major asset for the Rangers.

Though landing both Kaprizov and Panarin would be ideal, if the Rangers had to choose, Kaprizov would be an excellent replacement for Panarin.
