Kalen DeBoer Evaluates Alabama’s Quarterback Play in First Scrimmage
In 2025, Alabama will start a quarterback not named Jalen Milroe for the first time in two seasons. The likely candidates for the role are redshirt-junior Ty Simpson, redshirt-sophomore Austin Mack, and freshman Keelon Russell, with Simpson reportedly leading the pack.
Russell and Mack are both expected to compete for the backup spot, although they are highly talented in their own right. Russell, a five-star recruit and the No. 2 overall player in the Class of 2025, comes in with a lot of hype. Mack, a four-star recruit ranked No. 219 in the Class of 2023, transferred to Alabama along with Kalen DeBoer from Washington. 
Simpson, who was a five-star recruit (No. 25 overall) out of Westview (Martin, TN) in 2022, has attempted just 50 passes across three seasons, totaling 381 yards and no touchdowns. Despite limited playing time, he is the frontrunner for the starting position.
DeBoer shared his thoughts on the trio’s performance during Alabama’s first scrimmage on Saturday, praising their ability to protect the ball and lead the offense.
“The key thing with these quarterbacks is they’ve done a great job taking care of the football,” DeBoer said. “No interceptions today, and a few touchdown passes between them. Over the course of camp, all three have hit the completion percentage we aim for, which is at least 65%. They’ve been consistent, and they protect the ball well. There’ve only been about three picks throughout camp, even in seven-on-seven and team drills.”
DeBoer also highlighted their leadership in the huddle. “Ty and Austin, the veterans, get in the huddle, call the play confidently, and are sharp with it. Keelon is still learning but is progressing well. He’s making strides, delivering on explosive opportunities, and throwing the ball on time with confidence.”
As Alabama prepares for its 2025 season opener against Florida State on August 30, it remains to be seen which quarterback will get the starting nod. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM on ABC.
