Ryan Pulock Ready to Mentor Matthew Schaefer and Fellow Islanders Defensemen
The New York Islanders made a splash at the 2025 NHL Draft, selecting defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the coveted first overall pick. Schaefer, known for his elite skills and mature personality, has already captured the attention of the hockey community, including veteran defenseman Ryan Pulock.
Pulock first met Schaefer during the Islanders Development Camp and was impressed not only by the rookie’s talent but also by his character. “Schaefer’s a genuine kid, mature beyond his years,” Pulock shared in an interview with NewYorkIslanders.com. “I haven’t seen him much on the ice yet, but you can tell he’s a tremendous talent. He’s been through a lot and earned everything he’s got. He’s going to be a star player and a great addition to the team.”
When training camp rolls around in September, Pulock, now entering his ninth NHL season, will share the ice with Schaefer and other up-and-coming defensemen. While Pulock will continue to play a key role on the Islanders’ blue line, he is also embracing his mentorship responsibilities to help the younger players, led by Schaefer, adapt to the professional level.
“My approach is all about making them feel comfortable and showing them the right way to do things,” Pulock explained. “I remember being a rookie, and it meant a lot when an older player came over and helped me feel at ease. For me, it’s about helping these young guys build their confidence and perform at their best.”
With intense competition for roster spots expected in camp, Pulock is eager for the challenge and looks forward to guiding the team’s new talent. “The competition will be strong with some really talented young defensemen,” he said. “I’m excited to see what these guys can do and help them grow.”
For Schaefer, having a seasoned leader like Pulock by his side could play a crucial role in his success during his first NHL training camp.
