Chargers’ New Tight End Duo Could Be a Dangerous Weapon for Justin Herbert
The Los Angeles Chargers might be gearing up for more two-tight end formations in 2025, thanks to a promising new duo that’s quietly turning heads. 
While much of the offseason buzz has centered on the team’s upgraded wide receiver corps—with additions like Tre Harris, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and the return of franchise icon Keenan Allen to pair with rookie Ladd McConkey—another position group might end up being one of the most improved: tight end.
Last year, Will Dissly served as the team’s primary tight end, posting a career-best 481 receiving yards and two touchdowns. However, his performance was marred by costly mistakes, including two plays that directly led to interceptions in the team’s Wild Card loss to the Texans.
To bolster the position, the Chargers brought in veteran Tyler Conklin and rookie Oronde Gadsden II. Conklin, a reliable pass-catcher, has recorded four straight seasons with 50+ receptions. In 2024, he logged 449 yards and four touchdowns with the Jets—despite a struggling offense. Meanwhile, Gadsden, a former wide receiver turned tight end, is already making a strong impression in his first offseason with the team. He broke out at Syracuse last year with 73 catches for 934 yards and seven touchdowns.
At a recent practice, both Conklin and Gadsden caught red-zone touchdowns from quarterback Justin Herbert, according to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.
Having two legitimate receiving threats at tight end could give the Chargers a serious edge. While defenses will focus heavily on covering Keenan Allen and Ladd McConkey, Conklin and Gadsden may fly under the radar—making them potential difference-makers in the offense. This revamped tight end group could become a secret weapon for the Chargers in 2025, even if it’s not getting much attention yet.
