Texas Tech RB Quinten Joyner to Miss 2025 Season with Torn ACL

Texas Tech running back Quinten Joyner, a transfer from USC, will be sidelined for the entire 2025 season due to a torn ACL, as reported by On3’s Pete Nakos. Joyner, who joined Texas Tech in December after spending his first two seasons at USC, was expected to play a key role in the Red Raiders’ offense this year.

In 2024, Joyner was a Doak Walker Award watch list nominee, rushing for 478 yards on 63 carries (7.6 yards per attempt) for the Trojans during their first Big Ten season. With his injury, Texas Tech will now lean even more heavily on returning running backs J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey, who were also slated to contribute on both offense and special teams.

Head coach Joey McGuire had high praise for the trio of Joyner, Williams, and Dickey earlier in the year: “I feel great about all three of those guys. I think it’s going to be really important that we find ways to use all three of them.”

McGuire had hoped to utilize a three-man running back rotation, dubbed “The Committee,” inspired by his championship-winning teams at Cedar Hills High School. However, that plan will now be delayed until 2026.

Joyner, a former four-star recruit from Manor, Texas, was known for his impressive multi-sport background, including running a 100-meter dash in 11.06 seconds and throwing a 49-foot shot put in 2022. His strong offseason performances had set him up as a potential lead back for the Red Raiders.

Despite leading the Big 12 in points and total yards last season, Texas Tech ranked just eighth in rushing yards per game, even with a 1,500-yard rusher in Tahj Brooks. With Brooks now in the NFL after being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals, the Red Raiders had hoped Joyner could step into the starting role. Unfortunately, his injury means the backfield competition will continue into next season.
