Spurs Make Key Coaching Moves Ahead of Victor Wembanyama’s Third Season
The San Antonio Spurs have announced several significant additions and promotions to their coaching staff under Mitch Johnson, as Victor Wembanyama heads into his third season.
The Spurs revealed four new additions to Johnson’s assistant coaching team and three internal promotions on Monday afternoon. Joining the staff are Corliss Williamson, Scott King, Tim Martin, Rashard Lewis, and Andrew Weatherman. Meanwhile, Jimmy Baron and Josh Brannon have been elevated to dual roles as assistant coaches and player development staff, while Madison Clower has been promoted to player development analyst.
Wembanyama’s Progress and New Coaching Staff
In the previous season, Wembanyama played just 46 games after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis post-All-Star break. Despite this, the 7-foot-4 phenom averaged 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, and a league-high 3.8 blocks per game on 47% shooting. He was on track for a potential Defensive Player of the Year award and an All-NBA selection, though he ultimately earned the title of NBA Blocks Leader.
As Wembanyama heads into his third season, he’ll have a revamped coaching staff behind him. Notably, Tim Martin, who worked with Wembanyama during his time with Metropolitans 92 in France, will be joining as assistant coach/player development. Martin brings over 15 years of experience as an NBA skills trainer and has also worked with the G League’s Texas Legends from 2010-12.
Martin had high praise for Wembanyama, stating, “His ability to retain information and execute it on the court is unreal.”
The Spurs also retained Rashard Lewis, who had a role with the Summer Spurs during the NBA 2K26 Summer League, and welcomed reigning NBA G League Coach of the Year Scott King, who had a successful run with the Austin Spurs.
Lewis joins the staff after working as a guest coach with the Summer League team and previously serving as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons during the 2022-23 season.
Coaching Changes and Focus on Training Camp
With these new additions, there will be no return for Matt Nielsen and Brett Brown, who had long tenures with San Antonio. As Johnson takes the reins from Gregg Popovich, he’s made the decision to shape his own coaching bench.
With the coaching staff now set, the Spurs will shift their attention to the upcoming training camp this fall.
