Northern Illinois to Host Stony Brook in 2027, Rhode Island in 2028

The Northern Illinois Huskies have added two more teams to their future football schedules, with Stony Brook and Rhode Island set to visit in 2027 and 2028, respectively, according to FBSchedules.com. The details of both games were obtained through a public records request to Northern Illinois University.

Northern Illinois will host Stony Brook at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb, Illinois, on September 11, 2027. As part of the agreement, the Huskies will pay Stony Brook a $325,000 guarantee to play the game.

In 2028, Rhode Island will travel to DeKalb to face Northern Illinois at a yet-to-be-determined date. The game was originally scheduled for September 5, 2020, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a contract amendment, the Rams will receive a $400,000 guarantee for the rescheduled game.

Both Stony Brook and Rhode Island are members of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and will be making their first-ever appearances against Northern Illinois.

With the addition of Stony Brook and Rhode Island, Northern Illinois now has its four non-conference games set for the 2027 season. The Huskies will start the season with a road game against Nebraska on September 4, followed by road games at Colorado on September 18 and a home game against USF on September 25.

The addition of Rhode Island also helps to finalize Northern Illinois’ non-conference schedule for 2028, which already includes road games against Pitt (September 2), Ohio State (September 16), and Missouri (September 30).

Looking ahead, Northern Illinois will open the 2025 season on August 30 with a home game against Holy Cross, which will be streamed live on ESPN+ at 3:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 p.m. CT.
