Carlos Correa Offers Candid Take After Astros’ Disastrous Sweep by Tigers
Carlos Correa didn’t hold back when reflecting on the Houston Astros’ disastrous three-game series against the Detroit Tigers, which saw them swept in brutal fashion.
The Astros brought Correa back at the trade deadline to provide stability both in the batting lineup and at third base, but his leadership was equally crucial. Houston departed Detroit on Wednesday after a grim sweep, having been shut out in the first two games and finally snapping a 31-inning scoreless streak in the third. Meanwhile, ace Framber Valdez struggled mightily, allowing six runs in the first inning of the series finale.
After a tough 10-inning loss on Tuesday, where the Tigers won on a walk-off RBI walk by Gleyber Torres, the Astros had a team meeting. Correa was among those who spoke out. Following the sweep, he offered a blunt assessment to MLB.com and the media.
Correa’s No-Nonsense Assessment of the Sweep
“We got outplayed,” Correa stated plainly. “It’s as simple as that. They played better baseball. They played a really good brand of baseball, and we didn’t. When you’re facing one of the best teams in the league and you don’t show up, that’s going to happen.”
This series carries weight for a few reasons. Despite the sweep and Houston’s recent struggles (losing four straight and 15 of their last 26), they still hold a 1.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the American League West. Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers have begun to fade. Another crucial point: The Tigers, who swept Houston in the wild card series last season, could be a potential postseason opponent again. Detroit’s strong performance has put them at 76 wins, the best in the AL, making a higher seed unlikely for the Astros, who may need to face the Tigers again at Comerica Park in the playoffs.
While Correa didn’t mince words about the team’s poor performance, he also focused on the need to move forward. “We want to look at the bigger picture, but also fix what’s been happening the last week. We’ve got a great chance to do that in a four-game series in Baltimore,” he said. “My head is on the next game now. I want to flush this series, start fresh tomorrow, and go out with a positive mindset to win.”
Correa’s Impact Since Returning to Houston
After being reacquired by the Astros in a trade with the Minnesota Twins at the deadline, Correa has filled in at third base due to an injury to Isaac Paredes. Though he’s not a regular third baseman, Correa has performed well at the plate in his 17 games with Houston, posting a .333/.389/.470 slash line with an .859 OPS, along with two home runs and eight RBI. In contrast, he had a .267/.319/.386 line with a .705 OPS, seven homers, and 31 RBI over 93 games with the Twins this season.
If Correa can continue to hit well, the Astros have a chance to push through their recent slump as they head to Baltimore for a pivotal four-game series to close out the season’s matchup against the Orioles.
