3 Carolina Panthers Players Likely to Be Cut Before Roster Deadline

As the Carolina Panthers wrap up their preseason with a 19-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s clear that the team struggled, finishing 0-3 with only two touchdowns scored. Now, with Tuesday’s roster cut-down deadline approaching, the Panthers must trim their roster from 90 to 53 players, and several tough decisions are on the horizon. Here are three players who are likely to be let go:

QB Jack Plummer
Jack Plummer, the third-string quarterback, had a tough preseason, earning a team-low 35.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. Throughout the three preseason games, he struggled to run the offense and couldn’t connect with the Panthers’ receivers or tight ends. While having a third quarterback can be useful, Plummer’s lack of impact means he was unlikely to see the field unless both Bryce Young and Andy Dalton were injured. The Panthers should prioritize finding a more reliable backup and free up a roster spot for someone else.

DL A’Shawn Robinson
A’Shawn Robinson had some moments last season, especially as a pass rusher with 5.5 sacks and eight QB hits, but his struggles in run defense were a major liability. This continued into the preseason, where he earned a poor 36.2 PFF grade in run defense—third-lowest on the team. Given the Panthers’ need to shore up their interior defense, particularly against the run, Robinson’s inability to stop the ground game makes him expendable.

K Matthew Wright
The Panthers overhauled their special teams this offseason, leaving only long snapper JJ Jansen as the main holdover. The kicker battle between Matthew Wright and Ryan Fitzgerald has been clear, with Fitzgerald standing out during the preseason, hitting all three of his field goal attempts—including a 52-yarder—and earning a solid 70.8 PFF grade. Meanwhile, Wright missed his only attempt, resulting in a poor 43.4 grade. Unless the Panthers look for an external option, Fitzgerald is expected to win the job, making Wright expendable.

.@steelers @Panthers the best catch I saw all night was by this security guard….No Gloves. Soft Hands…zLooked it right into his mitts. #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/4exaqgWOOi
