Tigers Reportedly Set September Call-Ups as MLB Rosters Expand
As MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players for September, the Detroit Tigers are reportedly calling up two familiar names from Triple-A Toledo: Justyn-Henry Malloy and Sawyer Gipson-Long, per Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press.
Adding a position player and a pitcher is standard practice for teams still in the playoff mix, and both Malloy and Gipson-Long have previous big-league experience with Detroit. However, their stay might be short-lived. Petzold notes the team is expected to “shuffle the roster” throughout the final month, so their roles could be temporary.
Still, the two will have an early opportunity to prove themselves worthy of a postseason roster spot.
Justyn-Henry Malloy
The 25-year-old outfielder/first baseman has had multiple stints with the Tigers this season. In 45 MLB games, he’s slashed .208/.339/.281 with one home run and 16 RBIs. While those numbers have been underwhelming, Malloy has excelled in Triple-A, posting a .317/.444/.490 line with 8 home runs and 51 RBIs over 66 games. Detroit hopes that production will translate during the season’s final stretch.
Sawyer Gipson-Long
The 27-year-old right-hander, acquired in the 2022 trade for Michael Fulmer, made a strong MLB debut last season with a 2.70 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 20 innings. However, injuries—including Tommy John surgery and a hip procedure—have limited his availability in 2024.
He returned to the majors in June but landed back on the IL with neck stiffness after five outings. In his brief return on August 13, he threw two scoreless innings before being optioned again. With the Tigers needing pitching depth, Gipson-Long could carve out a role down the stretch, especially if he stays healthy.
