Sherrone Moore Confirms Jaishawn Barham’s Suspension for First Half vs. Oklahoma
Michigan will be without standout linebacker Jaishawn Barham for the first half of their Week 2 matchup against Oklahoma, following the final ruling on a controversial targeting call.
During last week’s game against New Mexico, Barham appeared to score on a scoop-and-score play, but the officials flagged him for targeting on quarterback Jack Layne, resulting in an ejection. The penalty meant Barham would miss the first half of the following game.
After the game, head coach Sherrone Moore publicly disagreed with the call and announced the team would appeal. However, during his Monday press conference, Moore confirmed that the appeal was denied and the ruling was upheld. He added that both he and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti disagreed with the outcome and believe the targeting rule needs to be reevaluated.
Barham’s absence is a big blow to Michigan’s defense. Known for his speed and physical play, he’s a versatile defender who can line up at linebacker or on the edge and consistently disrupts opposing offenses.
In the first half against Oklahoma, Jimmy Rolder and Cole Sullivan will step in. Rolder is an experienced backup often considered a third starter, while Sullivan, a sophomore, made a strong impression in the second half against New Mexico, recording a sack and a clutch interception.
Oklahoma’s offense will be a tough challenge. Quarterback John Mateer is a dual-threat who can beat teams with both his arm and legs, and former Cal standout Jayden Ott adds a dynamic option in the backfield.
The good news for Michigan is that Barham will be eligible to return in the third quarter, giving the defense a key boost in the second half.
