Jets Criticized for Massive $120 Million Offseason Deal

The New York Jets made waves this offseason with a blockbuster contract, but not everyone is applauding the move.

In an effort to bolster their roster, the Jets spent heavily—especially when it came to retaining their top talent. While the organization, now under GM Darren Mougey, appears committed to building a winning team, success may not come immediately.

One of the most controversial moves was a massive four-year, $120 million contract extension given to cornerback Sauce Gardner. Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon recently criticized the deal, including Gardner on his “All-Overpaid” team.

Criticism of Sauce Gardner’s New Deal

“We’re focusing on two new offseason contracts here—both involving young first-rounders who may one day justify the payday, but aren’t quite there yet,” Gagnon wrote. “Starting with Gardner, he became the highest-paid corner in NFL history just last month. While he was phenomenal as a rookie in 2022, his performance has declined over the past two seasons. He’s struggled with penalties and missed tackles, and his coverage stats have worsened—from allowing just 5.3 yards per target in Year 1 to 9.3 by Year 3. Plus, with only three career interceptions, he hasn’t shown elite playmaking ability.”

Gagnon also pointed out that the Jets are committed to paying Gardner over $53 million guaranteed in 2027 and 2028—a significant risk for a player still working to regain his rookie form.

Gardner’s Talent Still Holds Promise

Despite the criticisms, Gardner remains a promising young talent with plenty of time to develop. At just 25 years old, many believe his best football is still ahead of him. His raw ability and high ceiling are likely what convinced the Jets to lock him up long term.

In today’s NFL, elite players command elite pay. And while Gardner’s contract is steep, the alternative—losing him in free agency or via trade demand—may have been worse for the franchise.

While the decision is drawing scrutiny now, the Jets are clearly betting that Gardner will return to form and become a cornerstone of their defense for years to come.
