Saints Re-Sign Veteran QB Jake Haener, Shuffle Practice Squad
The New Orleans Saints have made another roster move ahead of the 53-man roster cutdowns, re-signing quarterback Jake Haener to the active roster after briefly moving on from him earlier. 
Haener, who was part of the quarterback competition throughout the summer, didn’t make the initial cut but quickly rejoined the team by signing to the practice squad. Now, the Saints have decided to bring him back to the 53-man roster, as confirmed by the team.
“New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced today that the club has signed quarterback Jake Haener to the active roster,” the Saints stated. “Additionally, linebacker Eku Leota and wide receiver Tommy Mellott have been signed to the practice squad.”
A Veteran Presence in the QB Room
Haener, 6-1, 200 pounds, is entering his third season with the Saints. The team drafted him in the fourth round (127th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Fresno State. In 2024, he saw his first NFL action, appearing in eight games with one start. During that time, Haener completed 18 of 39 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown, while also adding 22 rushing yards.
Although Haener didn’t win the starting job this summer, head coach Kellen Moore consistently praised all three quarterbacks on the roster. Haener didn’t play in the second preseason game, but Moore’s confidence in him never wavered. Now, with the addition of Haener to the active roster, the Saints have added depth behind Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough.
With Haener rejoining the active roster, the Saints now have four quarterbacks on the roster: Rattler, Shough, Haener, and undrafted free agent Hunter Dekkers, who remains on the practice squad after being re-signed.
