Panthers Make Two Roster Moves Ahead of 2025 Season Opener
The Carolina Panthers have made two roster adjustments as they prepare for their 2025 regular season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
First, the team placed cornerback Damarri Mathis on injured reserve, officially ending his season before it began. Mathis, who was claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos just last week, suffered a torn ACL during his first practice with the Panthers. The 2022 fourth-round draft pick has appeared in 43 NFL games during his career.
To fill Mathis’s spot on the 53-man roster, the Panthers signed defensive tackle Jaden Crumedy from the practice squad. Crumedy, a sixth-round pick by Carolina in the 2024 draft out of Mississippi State, played in five games as a rookie, recording half a sack and 13 total tackles.
It’s notable that the Panthers did not elevate either of their two practice squad cornerbacks, Michael Reid or Kalen King, to replace Mathis. With his injury, the team now has only five active cornerbacks: Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson, Chau Smith-Wade, Akayleb Evans, and Corey Thornton.
A larger question still looms, however: who will start at left tackle? Starter Ickey Ekwonu is recovering from recent appendicitis surgery and is listed as doubtful. If Ekwonu is unavailable, either Yosh Nijman or Brady Christensen is expected to fill in.
