Veteran WR Confident in Patriots’ Talent Despite Injuries
As the New England Patriots prepare for their 2025 season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, one wide receiver is emphasizing the team’s talent, despite several key injuries.
The Patriots’ roster is gearing up to showcase their abilities under new head coach Mike Vrabel, though not every player is at full strength. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been ruled out for the game after suffering a hamstring injury during the fifth training camp practice. Rookie left tackle Will Campbell, initially questionable, is now expected to play. Cornerback Charles Woods has also been downgraded to “out” for the game.
Despite these setbacks, wide receiver Stefon Diggs has shifted the focus to the team’s remaining talent. He expressed confidence in the players who will be on the field, stating that there are many individuals capable of making plays at a high level.
“We’ve got a lot of guys who can make plays at a high level,” Diggs said. “What I’m used to doesn’t matter… I’m just excited to get out there. No matter how many targets you get, just do your job and take advantage of the opportunities.”
Diggs, a 6’0″, 191-pound receiver, was signed by the Patriots as a free agent in March 2025 after a successful stint in Houston. Prior to 2024, he had recorded six consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons. And Diggs is right—while Gonzalez and Woods are sidelined, the Patriots still have plenty of promising talent to fill those gaps.
Offensively, rookie wide receiver Efton Chism III, who made the 53-man roster despite being undrafted from Eastern Washington, is expected to make an impact. Running back TreVeyon Henderson has also been generating buzz, with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels praising his speed and work ethic.
“He’s an awesome individual, a hard worker, and smart,” McDaniels said. “He’s explosive, tough, and the fastest running back I’ve ever worked with.”
Defensively, with Gonzalez out, cornerbacks like Carlton Davis III, Alex Austin, and D.J. James may see more time on the field to help fill the void in the secondary.
The season opener at Gillette Stadium kicks off at 1:00 p.m. EST on Sunday. The Patriots currently lead the all-time series against the Raiders, 20-17-1.
