Steelers Share Positive Update on Nick Herbig’s Injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers could have good news regarding linebacker Nick Herbig’s status for their Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets.

Ahead of the game, the Steelers made one roster move: they elevated cornerback James Pierre from the practice squad to the active roster. While the move itself wasn’t surprising, the fact that it was the only change made suggests favorable news for the defense.

Pierre’s call-up comes as the team navigates the absence of Cory Trice Jr., who has started the season on Injured Reserve due to a hamstring injury. Trice will be out for at least four weeks, and Pierre will likely step in during this time, with Daryl Porter Jr. possibly being promoted once Pierre’s eligibility runs out.

The Steelers are also dealing with an injury concern at outside linebacker. Nick Herbig, who suffered a hamstring injury during the second preseason game, has been limited in practice since. However, he was listed as questionable leading up to the game, and there’s optimism he could be ready to play.

By not elevating another outside linebacker, such as DeMarvin Leal, the Steelers may be signaling that Herbig is progressing well and could be available. Herbig expressed hope to play against the Jets, although he deferred to the medical staff to make the final call. Despite being limited in practice, he showed plenty of energy during individual drills, even getting fired up with some yelling and jumping after workouts.

While Pittsburgh could have added Leal to the roster and kept Herbig sidelined, they chose not to, further suggesting they’re confident in Herbig’s recovery.

The team’s final list of inactive players will be released roughly an hour and a half before kickoff. As the Steelers head to MetLife Stadium, it seems likely they’re feeling positive about Herbig’s chances of playing.
