Brent Pry Stays Confident in Virginia Tech’s Potential to Turn Season Around and Avoid Hot Seat
The 2025 season has been a tough one so far for the Virginia Tech Hokies. In his fourth year as head coach, Brent Pry is facing increasing pressure to turn things around, with his team currently sitting at 0-2. In Week 2, Virginia Tech let a first-half lead slip away against Vanderbilt, ultimately falling 44-20. Despite the rough start, Pry remains optimistic about the team’s ability to bounce back and believes doing so could help him avoid the hot seat.
“I absolutely believe we can turn it around,” Pry said. “I really like this team. I’m not happy with how we played in the second half, but I believe in these guys. There’s a lot of season left, and the beauty of it is that you get another chance every week. We’ll regroup, get a plan together, and this group of kids will stay together, own their mistakes, and work to improve for next Saturday.”
Pry took over at Virginia Tech in 2022, inheriting a team in need of rebuilding following Justin Fuente’s departure. This transition came amid sweeping changes in college sports, with conference realignment, NIL, and the Transfer Portal reshaping the landscape. Despite these challenges, Pry has struggled to find consistent success, compiling a 16-23 record, including a 10-13 mark in ACC play. Though he has led the Hokies to two bowl games, the program’s expectations remain high, and the pressure is mounting.
“I tell the players to block out the noise,” Pry explained. “I’ve been in situations like this before. The expectations here are clear—to win. That’s why I’m here. I’m not satisfied with where we are, but I like this team, and we’ll bounce back. There’s still plenty of football left to be played, and I’m excited about what we can accomplish.”
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Pry’s buyout is set at \$6 million, payable in quarterly installments through the remainder of his contract, which runs until December 31, 2027. His annual salary is \$4.75 million, and the buyout will decrease to \$2.5 million after the 2026 season.
For everyone involved, the goal remains for Pry and Virginia Tech to turn things around. The Hokies will look to get back on track next week when they face Old Dominion, marking their first game of the season against a non-SEC opponent.
