Aidan Hutchinson Discusses Increased Attention and Dropping Back into Coverage
Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson is set to face more attention this season. Ahead of the Lions’ season opener against the Green Bay Packers, Hutchinson’s return was a major storyline that generated excitement among fans.
During the game, Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport were occasionally tasked with dropping into coverage, a move that didn’t play out as Detroit’s defense had hoped. The Packers were able to move the chains and convert first downs as a result.
“We adjusted as the game went on and got out of that a little more, but we just happened to be in those positions during that game, which obviously wasn’t ideal,” Hutchinson explained. “The important thing is that we adjusted and evolved.”
Moving forward, Hutchinson is unlikely to be asked to drop back into coverage frequently.
Unfortunately, Hutchinson’s return wasn’t as successful as anticipated. The Lions lost 27-13, and Hutchinson didn’t record any statistics in the game. Part of the reason for his quiet performance was the Packers’ strategy of double-teaming him, using chip blocks, and scheming him out of plays.
Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the Packers’ game plan, showing respect for their execution. He admitted that he would have done the same to neutralize a player like Hutchinson.
“I think anybody we play is going to do the same,” Campbell said. “I always think of what I’d do — WWDD (What would Dan do)? I would not let Hutch wreck the game. There’s no way.”
Campbell noted that the Lions wanted to force the Packers to look elsewhere for a game-changer, but unfortunately, no one else on Detroit’s defensive line could break through against Green Bay’s offensive line.
He continued, “They’re not going to let him have a one-on-one on passing downs, and if they do, it’s going to be rare or the ball’s coming out quick.”
Hutchinson acknowledged the challenge, saying he had fewer than five opportunities to be in a one-on-one situation. He also noted that the defense’s slow start contributed to the Packers rarely being in obvious passing situations, which took away his chances to rush the quarterback.
“Maybe two or three times?” Hutchinson reflected on his one-on-one opportunities. “Defense let up a lot of points early, and when you get behind like that, the offense gets more conservative, and you don’t get as many passing downs to go all-out.”
However, Hutchinson found some hope in the defense’s second-half performance, noting that it gave him confidence moving forward.
“We have to start better on defense,” he said. “If it’s going to be a low-scoring game, we have to do our part. We didn’t do that early, but I’m happy with how we responded in the second half, and that gives me hope for the next game.”
Despite the tough opener, Hutchinson is focused on the long season ahead. He knows that his opportunities to rush the passer one-on-one will be limited, but when those chances do arise, he’s determined to make the most of them.
“The biggest thing to learn is to take full advantage of those one-on-one opportunities when you get them, because they’re going to be rare,” Hutchinson emphasized. “But when they’re there, you’ve got to make your mark.”
