Carlos Mendoza Reflects on Mets’ Current Struggles
The New York Mets are in the midst of a tough stretch that has made their road trip one to forget.
On Wednesday night, the Mets suffered their fifth consecutive loss, falling 11-3 to the Philadelphia Phillies. This marks their third straight defeat to the Phillies in the series, pushing them a season-high 10 games behind the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves. The Mets are now only two games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
This is the third time this season the Mets have endured a five-game losing streak.
Through the first three games of the series, New York has been outscored 11-6 by the Phillies, with one game left to avoid a disastrous sweep. Despite the team looking deflated, manager Carlos Mendoza was asked if he thought his players were demoralized after the loss.
“No,” Mendoza responded firmly. “They know where we’re at. These guys aren’t going to give up. They’re going to keep showing up, keep preparing, and keep competing. Nobody’s happy with how things are going, but we’ve got to keep pushing forward.”
The 2025 season has been a rollercoaster for the Mets. Back on June 13, they were riding high with a 45-24 record, boasting a comfortable 5.5-game lead over the Phillies. However, since then, the Mets have gone just 31-46, which is the fourth-worst record in Major League Baseball, ahead of only the Washington Nationals, Minnesota Twins, and Colorado Rockies.
Francisco Lindor, who is currently in a 0-for-14 slump, shared his thoughts on the team’s ongoing struggles.
“We haven’t been consistent,” Lindor said. “It’s one of those seasons where things just haven’t clicked for us. In baseball, there are always ups and downs, but the goal is to limit the downs and ride out the highs. For some reason, it’s been a very up-and-down year for us.”
However, Lindor remains optimistic, adding, “We’re still in a position to turn things around. Everyone is working hard to find that momentum and ride it for as long as we can. Baseball is all about momentum, and we just haven’t capitalized on the times we’ve had it.”
At one point, the Mets seemed almost certain to make the playoffs, but now they’re clinging to a narrow two-game lead for the final Wild Card spot, with the Reds and Giants closing in.
The Mets will try to salvage the final game of their series against the Phillies tonight before heading back home to face the red-hot Texas Rangers this weekend.
