CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Iowa volleyball team dropped a five-set battle to Southeast Missouri State on Thursday night at Houck Field House. The loss marked Iowa’s first five-set defeat since 2023, ending a streak of five straight wins in extended matches.

Graduate student Chard’e Vanzandt led the way with a season-high 22 kills while hitting .312. The Houston native became the first Hawkeye to surpass 20 kills in a match since Michelle Urquhart did so last year against Illinois. Freshman Carmel Vares added a breakout performance, finishing with 17 kills on .500 hitting with just three errors. Defensively, senior libero Milana Moisio set a career high with 19 digs and chipped in seven assists.

At the net, senior Claire Ammeraal posted 44 assists, seven kills, and seven digs. Redshirt sophomore Alyssa Worden tallied 10 kills and nine digs, while sophomore Jaimie Marquardt contributed three aces, the most by any Hawkeye in the match.

Match Summary

  • Set One (Iowa 25-21): Behind early offense from Vares and Vanzandt, Iowa took control late and secured its 14th straight set win, tying the third-longest streak in program history.

  • Set Two (SEMO 25-23): A back-and-forth battle ended with SEMO edging Iowa despite Vanzandt’s late surge, evening the match at one set apiece.

  • Set Three (Iowa 25-19): Iowa’s attack clicked, hitting .514 with 19 kills. Vanzandt and Vares combined for 16 as the Hawkeyes regained the lead.

  • Set Four (SEMO 25-22): Iowa built a mid-set cushion, but SEMO rallied with a decisive 6-1 run. The Redhawks closed it out to force a decisive fifth.

  • Set Five (SEMO 15-7): After Iowa tied the frame at 6-6, SEMO pulled away with an 8-0 run and sealed the match on their second match point.
