Brent Pry Asserts He’s Still the Right Head Coach for Virginia Tech Despite 0-3 Start

Things continue to spiral for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Old Dominion, falling 45-26 after being down 28-0 at halftime. This loss marked the worst of the three times Virginia Tech has fallen to ODU, further deepening the program’s struggles. With the Hokies now 0-3, the pressure is mounting, and questions are being raised about whether head coach Brent Pry’s tenure has reached its breaking point.

Despite the mounting difficulties, Pry stood firm after the game, insisting that he is still the right leader for the Hokies.

Things Aren’t Improving

Just over a year ago, Virginia Tech appeared poised for a breakthrough under Pry. Following a strong finish to the 2023 season, the Hokies returned a wealth of experience and talent, including future NFL prospects. The team was seen as a potential ACC contender and darkhorse playoff candidate.

However, the season has been nothing short of disappointing. After an upset loss to Vanderbilt, followed by defeats to Rutgers and a controversial loss to Miami, the Hokies dropped to 2-3. Though they rallied to win three straight games and briefly stayed in the hunt for the ACC Championship, they collapsed, losing four of their last five games, including a bowl defeat to Minnesota. The season has been a letdown, and with players like RB Bhayshul Tuten, OL Xavier Chaplin, and several key defensive backs leaving for the transfer portal or the NFL Draft, the future is uncertain.

Pry tried to fill these gaps through the transfer portal, but the results have been disappointing. Furthermore, the two new coordinator hires, Phillip Montgomery and Sam Siefkes, have not produced the desired results so far. What was meant to be a fix for the program is looking more like a temporary measure to save Pry’s job, but with each loss, the situation feels increasingly dire.

What’s Next?

This loss to Old Dominion is one of the most embarrassing in Virginia Tech’s history and could very well signal the end of Brent Pry’s time with the Hokies. While Old Dominion is a competent G5 team, the way they dominated Virginia Tech—especially the defense, which couldn’t stop ODU all night—has left fans and analysts alike questioning the program’s direction. The Monarchs amassed over 500 yards of offense, and the Hokies’ defense looked completely disoriented. For a program that has traditionally prided itself on its defensive strength, this performance was especially hard to swallow.

The situation is starting to feel unsustainable for Pry. With a tough season ahead and a team that doesn’t appear capable of turning things around, it’s unclear what the future holds for him and the Hokies. The loss to Old Dominion is just the latest chapter in what’s been a series of setbacks, and with just three games into the season, things aren’t looking promising for Virginia Tech’s immediate future.

Pry on why he is the right head coach for VT: “I see the strides we’ve made as a program.”
