Brent Pry Issues Statement After Being Fired by Virginia Tech
The Brent Pry era at Virginia Tech has officially come to an end after a tough 0-3 start to the season, culminating in a humiliating loss to Old Dominion. Pry, who had a 16-24 record during his tenure as head coach, was let go, and the search for a new leader for the Hokies will now begin.
Pry’s Statement Following His Departure
After his dismissal, Pry shared the following statement:
“On behalf of Amy and our entire family, I want to thank President Sands, Whit, and the Virginia Tech community for giving me the opportunity to lead this proud football program. Coaching at Virginia Tech has been an incredible honor, and it’s a chapter of our lives we will always cherish. To the outstanding young men I’ve had the privilege to coach, your hard work, resilience, and commitment to excellence—on the field, in the classroom, and as members of the community—have inspired me every single day.
To the dedicated assistant coaches and support staff, I’m incredibly grateful. Your sacrifice, professionalism, and loyalty are what keep this program going and lay the foundation for everything our players achieve. To the donors and the passionate Hokie faithful, your unwavering support for this program has been vital, and I encourage you to continue supporting these players as your energy makes Lane Stadium one of the best atmospheres in college football.
Finally, to Amy and the rest of our family—thank you for your love and strength. We’ve been in this together from the start, and we’ll continue this journey the same way. Blacksburg will always hold a special place in our hearts. We leave with wonderful memories, lifelong friendships, and will forever cheer for the Hokies.”
Virginia Tech’s Announcement
The university also issued a statement about the coaching change, with offensive coordinator Phillip Montgomery named as the interim head coach:
“Coach Brent Pry has been relieved of his duties effective immediately. We appreciate Coach Pry’s efforts and service since 2021. Unfortunately, the results on the field were not acceptable, and a change in leadership is necessary. Phillip Montgomery will serve as interim head coach. We will continue to fully support our team and student-athletes for the remainder of the season as we work to improve the trajectory of our football program.
To our students, alumni, and Hokie Nation, we understand and share your disappointment with this season. As we move forward, we ask for your continued support of our student-athletes and staff as they rise to the challenge. A task force, led by Board members J. Pearson and Ryan McCarthy, will work with university leadership and AD Whit Babcock to develop a comprehensive plan that will help position Virginia Tech football to compete with the best in the ACC. The plan will be presented to the Board of Visitors later this month, and we expect a new framework for college sports to be in place for next season.”
Virginia Tech will return to action this Saturday at Noon, facing Wofford.
