The Oklahoma Sooners lose their 2025 quarterback commit in surprising fashion as Kevin Sperry flips to Florida State
The Oklahoma Sooners have been working hard to keep their 2025 recruiting class together during a tough 2024 season. However, losing longtime quarterback commit Kevin Sperry wasn’t something they anticipated.
On Thursday night, the three-star quarterback announced his commitment to Florida State, making him the Seminoles’ only quarterback pledge for the 2025 cycle, rather than for Oklahoma.
Sperry had been committed to the Sooners for about a year and a half, originally pledging to OU when there were no other commitments in the 2024 or 2025 classes. He was one of the Sooners’ most active recruiters throughout his commitment, even relocating to Oklahoma. During that time, Sperry helped attract in-state talent and participated in numerous on-campus events, including prospect camps and gameday visits.
Sperry initially committed to Oklahoma when Jeff Lebby was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. After Lebby’s departure and Seth Littrell stepping in, followed by Littrell’s dismissal, there was speculation about how Sperry would respond to all the changes. Although several in-season interviews suggested he had no concerns, his recent decision to break his long-standing commitment has come as a surprise.
As the recruitment cycle progresses, Oklahoma is expected to act swiftly in securing a quarterback for its 2025 class, benefiting from a wealth of in-state talent this year.
Jamarian Ficklin is likely to be the Sooners’ top target. The Muskogee, Oklahoma native, who has been committed to Texas State for some time, is highly regarded throughout the state. He visited Oklahoma unofficially during the Maine game, showing that the Sooners are keeping a close watch on him. Although he remains committed to Texas State, Ficklin’s recruitment has picked up recently, including an offer from Utah, and he plans to take an official visit with the Utes this weekend.
Ficklin is expected to remain a primary target for Oklahoma throughout the cycle. However, there are other candidates that could come into play. Grady Adamson, a three-star quarterback from Deer Creek in Edmond, Oklahoma, is currently committed to Georgia Tech. David McComb, who plays at Memorial in Edmond and is committed to Kansas, could also be a potential option. Another name to keep an eye on is Shaker Reisig from Union in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who is committed to Boston College.
This turn of events marks an unexpected development for Oklahoma as they watch a key prospect for their 2025 class consider other options. However, there’s still plenty of time for the Sooners to adjust their strategy and find the best way forward.
