Mets Pitchers Could Be Shifted to Bullpen, Insider Says
The New York Mets have a surplus of starting pitchers available as they gear up for the postseason. While this is generally a good problem for a manager, the downside is that many of these pitchers have struggled this season, or at least in recent months, putting their spots in the rotation at risk.
One thing that’s clear is that rookie Nolan McLean has firmly earned his place as a top starter should the Mets make the playoffs. Meanwhile, David Peterson, despite his rough performance since being named an NL All-Star earlier this year (posting a 5.01 ERA over his last 15 games and a 7.13 ERA in his last seven), likely still deserves a postseason start given his overall body of work.
Sean Manaea has underperformed this season, but his strong 2024 campaign, which includes key playoff starts in the Mets’ run to the NLCS, has given him credibility and earned trust within the organization and fanbase.
So, what about the remaining starters?
David Stearns’ Thoughts on Potential Bullpen Moves
Mets President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, spoke with the media before a September 16th home game against the San Diego Padres. According to SNY’s Andy Martino on X, Stearns suggested that several starting pitchers could be moved to the bullpen as the Mets look for another reliable right-handed reliever in high-leverage situations.
Stearns mentioned that “all options were on the table,” with candidates like Clay Holmes, Brandon Sproat, and Kodai Senga being considered for the bullpen.
Holmes’ inclusion is notable, as he’s primarily been a reliever throughout his career, including a stint as the Yankees’ closer from 2022 to 2024, earning two All-Star selections. His experience could make him a logical fit for a late-inning role, especially after Ryan Helsley’s struggles in New York left a void in that high-leverage spot.
Rookie Brandon Sproat has the potential to excel in a bullpen role, and Kodai Senga, who has a history of bouncing back in the minors, could also be effective in such a position.
With these decisions looming, it seems the Mets have some tough calls ahead in the coming days and weeks.
