Cardinals Fan-Favorite Could Be ‘Expendable’ in Certain Scenario
As the St. Louis Cardinals approach the offseason, the big question is: who’s safe on the roster?
Right now, it seems like few players are guaranteed a spot, with the regular season winding down. Shortstop Masyn Winn, starting pitcher Michael McGreevy, and top prospect JJ Wetherholt appear to be the most secure for next year. Players with no-trade clauses, such as Sonny Gray, Nolan Arenado, and Willson Contreras, have control over their futures.
However, as everything remains in flux, one player who could be on the trading block is outfielder Lars Nootbaar. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Nootbaar could be “expendable” if the team decides to commit to other emerging talents like Victor Scott II or Nathan Church.
Rosenthal mentioned that Contreras, who plays first base, has made it clear he doesn’t want to waive his no-trade clause. With a strong list of prospects in the pipeline—such as Jimmy Crooks, one of the top catching prospects, and Wetherholt, who should fit into the infield—Nootbaar’s position could be in jeopardy.
However, there’s some reassurance for Cardinals fans. Chaim Bloom, the incoming head of baseball operations, previously helped set up the Boston Red Sox for success during his tenure there. Under Bloom, the Red Sox made several key acquisitions and draft picks, such as Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, which helped lay the foundation for their current strength.
With just days remaining in the regular season, the Cardinals are gearing up for a pivotal offseason. The new front office, led by Bloom, will be tasked with revamping the roster. Given the end of the John Mozeliak era, this offseason is expected to be crucial in shaping the future of the organization.
