Steve Nash Returns to Suns in New Role
Phoenix Suns legend Steve Nash is coming back to the franchise, but this time in a new capacity.
Suns owner Mat Ishbia made a significant announcement on Monday, revealing that Nash will join the organization as a senior advisor. Ishbia expressed his excitement about Nash’s return, stating, “Steve Nash was an amazing player and exactly what the Phoenix Suns are all about. His grit, toughness, and winning mentality have defined our organization in the past, and I’m so excited to share that Steve is formally joining the Suns as a senior advisor and will help us define our future for years to come!”
Ishbia has repeatedly emphasized his desire to establish a new, gritty identity for the Suns, and Nash is seen as a perfect fit to help shape that future.
Nash, widely regarded as the most accomplished player in Suns history, was inducted into the Suns Ring of Honor in 2015 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. He won back-to-back MVPs with the Suns in 2005 and 2006, was an eight-time All-Star, and a seven-time All-NBA selection. Nash also led the league in assists five times and was a member of the 50-40-90 club for a then-record four seasons.
The Suns originally drafted Nash 15th overall in 1996, and after spending two years with the team, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. In Dallas, Nash became one of the NBA’s top point guards, making the All-Star Game in 2002 and 2003 before returning to Phoenix in 2004. Under coach Mike D’Antoni, Nash led one of the most dynamic offenses in NBA history, helping the Suns reach three Western Conference Finals.
Nash played for the Suns until 2012, when he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. After retiring in 2015 due to back issues, Nash served as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2020 to 2022, where he coached stars like former Suns player Kevin Durant.
Recently, Nash co-hosted LeBron James’ “Mind The Game” podcast and was hired for Amazon Prime’s NBA coverage for the 2025-26 season.
In his new role, Nash will assist head coach Jordan Ott in establishing Ishbia’s vision for the Suns, offering valuable insight as the franchise embarks on a new era following major offseason changes, including the departures of Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.
