Notable Offensive Lineman Departs from UNC’s Football Program
For the second time this week, a North Carolina football player has left the team. On Monday evening, it was reported that offensive tackle Trevyon Green had departed the program, marking the second exit after wide receiver Aziah Johnson left on September 16th. Green, a redshirt junior, had a solid 2024 season, starting all 13 games at right tackle and playing 819 snaps. However, his playing time dramatically decreased in 2025, with just 11 snaps against Charlotte and only five against Richmond.
At 6-foot-8 and 340 pounds, Green was a powerful run blocker, but he struggled with pass protection. His PFF pass-blocking grade was 49.3, and he averaged a 37.9 grade in his first six ACC games during the 2024 season. His toughest performance came against Duke, where he allowed nine pressures, seven hurries, and a sack. Of his 16 snaps in that game, 13 were run plays, and he was often used as an extra lineman in unbalanced formations.
Since Green left before playing in four games, he can still reclaim this season if he enters the transfer portal and decides to continue his career elsewhere. He still has two years of eligibility left.
Offensive Line Struggles Continue
While Green’s departure might not be a major concern on its own, it highlights the ongoing issues with North Carolina’s offensive line. The line has struggled against Power Four competition this season, allowing four sacks and 13 tackles for loss in games against TCU and UCF.
The offensive line’s struggles have extended to run blocking as well. In three of its four games (excluding the Charlotte matchup), the offensive line received run-blocking grades in the 50s, with a high of 53.4 against TCU in the season opener, according to Pro Football Focus.
These struggles have hindered the running backs, who have had difficulty finding running lanes. While the talent in the running back room has been part of the issue, freshman Demon June’s emergence has provided some relief. June has accumulated 250 yards and a touchdown over the first three games, somewhat mitigating the offensive line’s struggles for now.
