Pacers Bolster Backcourt, Sign Veteran Guard
The Indiana Pacers have signed veteran guard Monte Morris to a one-year deal, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Entering his ninth season in the NBA, Morris is expected to provide backcourt depth for the Pacers, particularly in the absence of Tyrese Haliburton for the upcoming season.
Last year, Morris played for the Phoenix Suns, appearing in 45 games. Over the course of his career, Morris has primarily been a backup point guard, with a few exceptions. Throughout his eight seasons in the league, he has averaged 9.5 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.5 rebounds per game while shooting 38.9% from three and 47.7% from the field.
During his time with the Suns, Morris did not feature as prominently as he had in previous seasons, taking on more of a bench role. However, he contributed as a veteran leader, setting an example for his teammates both on and off the court.
At the start of last season, Morris reflected on his growth in leadership, noting his dedication to helping his teammates even when he wasn’t getting regular playing time.
“Just coming in, guys see me at all hours,” Morris said after practice. “Whether I’m playing or not, I’ve stayed the same—full of joy, pushing guys and pushing myself. I think that’s what I’ve really focused on.”
Morris acknowledged how important it is to maintain a positive mindset despite limited playing time: “I wasn’t feeling sorry for myself, and that’s underrated. A lot of guys fall into that, and then when they get their opportunity, they’re not ready. I’m just happy with where I am now because, a couple of years ago, I probably would’ve been down.”
Now 29, Morris brings years of experience and a mature approach to the game. His mindset and leadership will be valuable assets to the Pacers, who already boast a solid veteran presence.
While the Pacers have a number of veteran leaders, Morris will likely complement the team’s culture and provide stability for head coach Rick Carlisle. With available minutes in the backcourt, especially for a player who can generate offense, Morris’s basketball IQ and decision-making could prove to be a strong addition for the Pacers moving forward.
