Rangers Shut Down Star Infielders for Rest of Regular Season
The Texas Rangers have decided not to bring back shortstop Corey Seager or second baseman Marcus Semien for the remainder of the regular season.
With playoff hopes fading, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy announced on Monday that both players would remain on the 10-day injured list for the rest of the year. The news was reported by multiple outlets, including The Dallas Morning News on X (formerly Twitter).
Semien has been sidelined since Aug. 23 due to a fracture in his third metatarsal and a lisfranc sprain in his foot. Initially expected to miss four to six weeks, he had hoped to return before the season’s end. Seager, meanwhile, has been out since Aug. 29 after undergoing an appendectomy.
Corey Seager’s Season
Seager, in his fourth season with the Rangers after signing a 10-year, $325 million contract, will finish the year with a .271/.373/.487 slash line in 102 games, along with 21 home runs and 50 RBIs. His 102 games played is the fewest since his final season with the Dodgers in 2021 (95 games).
Seager also missed time earlier this season due to a left hamstring injury, preventing him from hitting 30 home runs for the first time since joining the Rangers.
In his nine-year career, Seager has been named NL Rookie of the Year, a five-time All-Star, a three-time Silver Slugger, and a two-time World Series champion. He is also a two-time World Series MVP and a former NLCS MVP. He’ll turn 32 in 2026.
Marcus Semien’s Season
Semien is in the fourth year of a seven-year, $175 million deal and is known as a durable, everyday player. Since joining the Rangers, he has played in at least 159 games every season. In 2021 and 2023, including the Rangers’ World Series year, he played in all 162 games, and in 2022, he appeared in 161.
Despite his durability, Semien has had a slow start at the plate this season, and if the year ended now, it would be his worst offensive performance since joining Texas. He is currently slashing .230/.305/.364 with 15 home runs and 64 RBIs. Semien will enter his age-35 season in 2026 with over $60 million remaining on his contract.
