Steelers Offense Struck by Another Injury Setback
Injuries have continued to be a major issue for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the early stages of the 2025 season.
PITTSBURGH — Just ahead of their international matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, the Steelers received more discouraging news regarding injuries. The ongoing injury woes have defined Pittsburgh’s season thus far, and even while traveling overseas, they couldn’t shake off the injury troubles.
Tight end Jonnu Smith, who is in his first year with the team, was unexpectedly added to the injury report just before the Steelers departed for Dublin, Ireland. After their sole practice session at the historic Carton House — where the team is staying during their overseas trip — the Steelers updated their Week 4 injury report, listing Smith as questionable for the game against the Vikings.
Smith is not the only key player with a questionable status for Week 4. Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith was already ruled out earlier this week due to an ankle injury, while running back Jaylen Warren and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. also find themselves listed as questionable. Warren’s appearance on the report was similarly a late addition, just like Smith’s.
If Smith is unable to play, the Steelers have three other tight ends on the roster who could step in, though it would limit their offensive options. Smith has been the starter alongside Pat Freiermuth throughout the first three weeks. Without Smith, Darnell Washington is expected to take on more snaps and likely start in Week 4. Special teams contributor Connor Heyward may also see an increased role at tight end.
Smith’s start to his Steelers career has been rocky. The former Pro Bowl tight end is a favorite of offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, evident by the 13 targets he’s seen in the first three games. Smith has caught 12 of those targets for 65 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.4 yards per reception.
While Smith is clearly gaining the trust of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the challenge has been turning those opportunities into more substantial plays and production. As the offense develops, the Steelers are aiming to get the ball to their playmakers more frequently, including finding creative ways to involve Smith.
