Blazers GM: Playoffs Aren’t the Priority for Portland This Season
A new season always brings hope for fans — even the most skeptical ones find a reason to get excited when the regular season begins. But that optimism can take a hit when team leadership doesn’t share the same enthusiasm.
At the Portland Trail Blazers’ media day, general manager Joe Cronin addressed the team’s outlook for the upcoming 2025-26 season. When asked about the team’s chances of making a playoff push, Cronin struck a surprisingly measured tone.
“The goal is to compete every night,” Cronin said. “Do we want to make the play-in? Yes. Do we want to make the playoffs? Yes. Do we want to win 16 playoff games? Yes. But I don’t have expectations and won’t be disappointed if those things don’t happen as long as we are continuing to grow.”
While Cronin’s honesty may be refreshing, the comments came off as a bit deflating given the team’s recent progress and young talent.
A Roster Full of Promise
The Blazers closed last season on a high note and return with a promising core that includes Shaedon Sharpe, Deni Avdija, Toumani Camara, Donovan Clingan, Scoot Henderson, and Yang Hansen. They also added veteran guard Jrue Holiday to bring leadership and experience on the court.
Additionally, Damian Lillard — still recovering from an Achilles injury — rejoined the team, bringing valuable off-court leadership as he works toward a return.
Given this mix of rising stars and veteran presence, there’s reason for Rip City to feel optimistic. In fact, expectations might reasonably be higher than Cronin suggests.
Blazers Could Be Better Than Expected
Looking at the Western Conference landscape, there’s a solid argument that the Blazers could outperform teams like the Jazz, Kings, Suns, and Pelicans. Even in a worst-case scenario, they should be firmly in the mix with teams like San Antonio for a spot in the play-in tournament.
So, while Cronin is taking the long-term view and focusing on development over results, it wouldn’t be a stretch to see this team contending for a play-in or even a playoff spot in 2025-26 — regardless of what the front office is publicly expecting.
