In order to elevate their game across the board, the Florida Gators’ defense must address a critical area swiftly.
On the offensive front, the University of Florida boasts the potential to strike fear into opposing defenses. However, the defensive side of the ball requires significant tightening up to match the offensive prowess and contend effectively.
With less than two months until kickoff, the Gators have a prime opportunity to zero in on the shortcomings that plagued their defense in 2023. Reflecting on past issues is crucial for paving the way to future solutions. Chief among these concerns is the rush defense.
During the 2023 season, the Gators struggled with an erratic and inconsistent approach to stopping the run, which directly contributed to an uneven performance overall. Their national ranking in rush defense, 79th, underscores the urgency of the situation. Head coach Billy Napier cannot afford another season marred by defensive deficiencies.
Last season, opponents attempted to run the ball against the Gators just 386 times, the fewest in the SEC and seventh fewest nationally among FBS teams. Despite this, Florida surrendered 1,867 rushing yards, ranking fifth highest in the conference and 61st nationally. In the highly competitive SEC, where standards are exceptionally high, these numbers highlight a glaring area for improvement.
The talent on Florida’s defense is undeniable, but the need for immediate improvement cannot be overstated. While it may sound like a cliché, the defense must step up significantly to meet the expectations placed upon them.
There were some positive signs amidst the struggles in 2023. Notably, opponents averaged 5.46 yards per carry in the first half, but this dropped to 4.12 yards per carry after halftime. The halftime adjustments made by the coaching staff clearly had a positive impact, as evidenced by the reduction in explosive plays allowed in the latter halves of games.
Looking ahead to potential solutions, Florida’s defensive scheme, traditionally a 3-3-5 formation, may need adjustments. Players like Justus Boone, known for his strength and ability to set the edge, will be pivotal in anchoring the defense and preventing opposing running backs from breaking to the perimeter.
