Fever Coach Says Caitlin Clark Is Being Used as a ‘Pawn’ Amid Growing Criticism of WNBA Leadership
Although Caitlin Clark has only appeared in 13 games for the Indiana Fever this season, head coach Stephanie White came to the star guard’s defense on Friday as tensions grow between WNBA players and league leadership.
White spoke out following recent controversy involving WNBA Players Association vice president Napheesa Collier, who claimed that commissioner Cathy Engelbert told her that Clark and other young stars should be “on their knees” in gratitude for the league’s platform. Engelbert has since denied making those remarks.
“I feel for Caitlin,” White said during an appearance on Query & Company on 107.5 The Fan in Indianapolis. “She’s a 23-year-old who loves the game, and she’s being used as a pawn in other people’s agendas and narratives. It’s really unfortunate.”
White praised Clark’s maturity and composure despite the immense pressure and scrutiny surrounding her. “She’s wise beyond her years. Think about being 23 — she handles it with such grace. She has a good support system, and she sees the bigger picture.”
Clark hasn’t played since mid-July due to quad and groin injuries. Despite that, she had an impressive rookie season, earning Rookie of the Year honors with averages of 19.2 points and 8.4 assists over 40 games.
White noted how rare Clark’s experience is in sports. “Outside of maybe Tiger Woods or Serena Williams, there aren’t many athletes who’ve been true game-changers and gone through what Caitlin is going through. Most people just can’t relate. What we can do is support her, help her navigate all this. But ultimately, it’s her life, and she’s handling it with incredible poise.”
Collier has openly criticized WNBA leadership, particularly Engelbert, during her postgame comments after the Lynx were eliminated in the semifinals by the Phoenix Mercury.
White acknowledged the complexity of the situation. “From a business standpoint, the league has made necessary decisions. But now it’s time to take the next step—especially in leadership. That means bringing in more people who understand the basketball side of things.”
She emphasized the importance of involving former players in league operations. “We need people who know where the league is now—not where it was 10 or 15 years ago. The WNBA has evolved, and some in leadership may still be stuck in the past.”
White concluded by highlighting the importance of listening to players and fostering honest conversations. “Employees are your greatest asset. We’re at a crucial moment, and it’s time to have the hard discussions. We must recognize that multiple truths can exist, and start figuring out what the future of this league looks like.”
