Veteran Forward Luke Glendening Expected to Sign with Devils After PTO
Luke Glendening is poised to join the New Jersey Devils for the 2025-26 NHL season after making a strong impression during training camp on a professional tryout (PTO) deal, according to a source from New Jersey Hockey Now.
The 36-year-old forward has remained active with the team, practicing with the main group likely to suit up for Thursday’s season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes. Glendening has been skating on the fourth line and has impressed head coach Sheldon Keefe, who praised his performance in camp and during the preseason.
Keefe acknowledged that while the contract isn’t finalized yet, Glendening is expected to stick with the team, noting that some final details are still being worked out. “This time of year, it’s not always just about the decision—it’s also a numbers game,” Keefe explained.
In five preseason appearances, Glendening recorded a goal and an assist, along with seven shots on goal. However, his value extends beyond offense—he has stood out defensively and was dominant in the faceoff circle, winning nearly 71% of his draws (39 of 55).
Keefe emphasized Glendening’s contributions beyond the stat sheet: “He brings a lot—faceoff ability, penalty killing, leadership, experience. He’s had a strong camp, and he’s been a great presence on and off the ice.”
Glendening has been centering the fourth line alongside Paul Cotter and Arseny Gritsyuk, forming a balanced line combining speed, grit, and skill. Keefe believes the trio has the tools to exploit favorable matchups and contribute in key situations.
“We’ve tried to add more skill to our bottom six,” Keefe said. “Cotter showed last season he can produce in that role, and Gritsyuk brings energy and offensive potential. I liked his game a lot, especially in the first period—he was aggressive on the puck, created chances, and got shots off.”
A 12-year NHL veteran, Glendening has played 864 games with the Red Wings, Lightning, and Stars, totaling 82 goals and 166 points, along with 50 playoff appearances. His mix of experience, defensive reliability, and leadership makes him a valuable addition as the Devils gear up for a competitive season.
