Sun Devils Regain Key Starter for Week Seven Clash
TEMPE – After a timely bye week, the No. 21 Arizona State Sun Devils are preparing to continue their strong start in Big 12 play as they aim for a 3-0 conference record. Next up: a road test against the Utah Utes, a top-25 caliber opponent known for their physical play in the trenches, upgraded quarterback play, and a unique offensive system.
Heading into Saturday’s matchup in Salt Lake City, there was hope that the extra week would allow some key players to return. While head coach Kenny Dillingham was hesitant to express optimism last week, he offered a bit of good news during his Monday press conference.
“Other than [Jalen] Moss being back — he’ll be available for the game. Zac Swanson will more than likely be out. And trying to think, you know, X [Alford] will be out for the game. Other than that, not many other guys with a change in status,” Dillingham said.
Status Breakdown: Who’s In, Who’s Out
Returning: Jalen Moss
Moss, ASU’s starting slot receiver, is expected to return after missing time since the second half of the season opener against Northern Arizona. His presence should reintroduce a dynamic element to the Sun Devils’ offense. Even with Moss back, receivers like Jaren Hamilton and Derek Eusebio are still expected to contribute.
Out: Xavion Alford
Alford, who’s been sidelined since Week 3 against Texas State, had been a hopeful return candidate for the Texas Tech game. While his injury remains undisclosed, Dillingham confirmed he won’t be available for the Utah matchup. In his absence, Adrian “Boogie” Wilson has stepped up and performed admirably.
Doubtful: Zac Swanson
Swanson, a defensive tackle, is unlikely to suit up. He’s been recovering from a foot injury sustained at the end of spring camp. He played against TCU but appears to be sidelined again. Expect Blazen Lono-Wong and others to rotate in at the position.
Still Out: Montana Warren & Zyrus Fiaseu
Fiaseu was a late addition to the injury report before the Baylor game and also missed the TCU matchup. Warren has been out since Baylor. In his place, Kyndrich Breedlove has been delivering high-level performances.
